Pakistan’s Foreign Office said on Tuesday that Cambodian authorities have agreed to send back 54 Pakistani nationals detained after a raid on “scamming compound”.
The development follows reports that more than 200 Pakistanis were being held by police in Cambodia, with concerns raised about overcrowded conditions and a lack of basic facilities.
In a statement, the Foreign Office spokesperson said its embassy in Cambodia had taken up the issue with local authorities and remained actively engaged on the matter.
The FO said the move comes in line with directions issued by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar to ensure support for Pakistanis living abroad.
As a result of diplomatic efforts, Cambodian authorities have agreed to the early repatriation of 54 detainees held in Siem Reap province. The individuals were taken into custody during a raid on what officials described as a “scamming compound”.
The FO added that embassy officials are working to ensure the well-being of those in custody and are coordinating arrangements for their return. The detainees are expected to leave Cambodia once travel plans are finalised.
It further said that, as a goodwill gesture, Cambodian authorities have decided not to pursue legal action against the individuals being repatriated.
