The Sindh government has decided to link surveillance cameras installed in the People’s Bus Service and the upcoming Electric Vehicle (EV) Taxi Service with the Safe City Network.
Sindh’s Senior Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, said that the integration of the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) with the Safe City Project would enhance security, improve traffic management, and strengthen public safety in Karachi and other major cities.
He added that the system would allow real-time monitoring of public transport, helping authorities respond more effectively to incidents on the road.
Memon confirmed that the province is set to launch the new EV Taxi Service in December, offering affordable, secure, and eco-friendly travel options. During a meeting with investors in Karachi, discussions were held on the project’s framework, including the setup of charging stations and operational plans.
Emphasising the need for a modern transport network in Karachi, Memon said the government aims to provide commuters with a comfortable and efficient alternative to conventional taxis. The initiative, he added, has attracted strong interest from investors and will initially roll out in Karachi before being expanded to other cities.
A separate Pink EV Taxi Service will also be introduced exclusively for women to ensure safer and more comfortable travel for female passengers. Both services will incorporate advanced ITS features and will be monitored through the Safe City Network for better oversight and transparency.
Memon highlighted that the Sindh government is encouraging private-sector collaboration to advance sustainable transport and environmental initiatives. He said the EV Taxi Project would not only facilitate commuters but also support the province’s economic growth.
