Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif officially launched the "Honhaar Scholarship Scheme" on Wednesday at Punjab University, distributing cheques to students during a ceremony attended by faculty and students.
During her speech, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz revealed that 70,000 applications had been received for the scholarship, and 30,000 scholarships would be awarded—18,000 to male students and 12,000 to female students.
In addition to the scholarships, the Chief Minister announced a new interest-free loan scheme aimed at supporting students in starting their own businesses.
The loans will be provided in easy installments, with the goal of easing the financial burden on students and their families.
Maryam Nawaz also confirmed the next phase of the laptop scheme would launch in January. "This program will help turn the dreams of underprivileged students into reality," she stated.
The Chief Minister highlighted her commitment to the education of talented students, calling it her responsibility, and stressed the importance of investing in the future of Pakistan's youth.
She also remarked that the true identity of Pakistan lies in its students, who should focus on education rather than engaging in protests.
Criticizing previous government, Maryam Nawaz questioned why public funds were not used effectively to support education, stating that millions of children would have been educated if funds had been allocated properly.
She assured the audience that the current government is focused on securing a better future for students.
During the ceremony, scholarship recipients were honored with a guard of honor by a police contingent, and CM Maryam Nawaz engaged warmly with the students of GC University.
