Renowned lawyers and political leaders have slammed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's federal government's decision to ban Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Earlier today, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar said that the government has decided to ban the former ruling party for its alleged involvement in "anti-state activities".
According to the federal minister, the coalition government has also decided to file treason cases under Article 6 against Imran Khan and his close aides, Arif Alvi and Qasim Suri.
"PTI and Pakistan cannot move forward together," Tarar said while addressing a press conference in Islamabad.
“In view of the foreign funding case, May 9 violents, and the cipher as well as the resolution passed in the US, we believe that there is very credible evidence present to ban PTI," the federal minister said.
Tarar further informed that the federal government would move the Supreme Court to file a petition seeking a ban on PTI.
“You [Imran Khan] tried to damage the country’s diplomatic relations for the sake of your political interests and went on to get a resolution passed against Pakistan in the US,” he said.
“Thus, [a case against] foreign funding is established, the attacks of May 9 are established, the cipher case is established, the resolution in the US is established; therefore, the federal government has decided that, in view of all the evidence, we will move a case to ban the PTI”.
In response, renowned lawyer and human rights activist Jibran Nasir said that despite a year of efforts, the PML-N and establishment have failed to dent PTI's popularity and acceptance among the masses.
"The pursuit of seeking a ban on PTI not only shows how weak the PMLN is but how desperate and frustrated the Establishment has become whose every effort in the past one year has failed to dent PTI's popularity and acceptance amongst the masses," he wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

"Neither the establishment could fool the voters to support the PMLN over PTI with propaganda nor could it terrorize its core members and workers to leave PTI through raids, arrests, abductions and torture," the lawyer added.
Reacting to the development, former PTI leader Maleeka Bokhari said that the opponents have accepted their defeat.
"If you need to ban the largest political party of Pakistan because you could not defeat your opponents in the political arena, you have accepted defeat,"
She believes that the end of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), which ousted Imran Khan from the prime minister's office in 2022, have begun.
If you need to ban the largest political party of Pakistan because you could not defeat your opponents in the political arena, you have accepted defeat. This is the beginning of the end for the PDM fascist regime.

"This is the beginning of the end for the PDM fascist regime. Cowards threatening warriors who faced torture, imprisonment, fake cases and oppression, yet emerged as the single largest party of Pakistan," the lawyer said.
"Good luck trying to defeat PTI and the people of Pakistan."

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Mushahid Hussain said that the old mistakes are being repeated by the political leaders.
It’s Yesterday Once More! 1975: NAP banned by PPP; 1971: Awami League banned by General Yahya Khan; 2024: PTI ban announced by PML-N! Pakistani-British journalist Ishtisham ul Haq said that the government is playing with fire.
The government is playing with fire. They are saying everything that is fed to them. Banning PTI will never work, can’t work, and it’s going to be a bad move. This will backfire on PML-N the day they are not in the government. This will haunt them every day.

Federal Govt cannot ban even 1 percent of PTI. More Shame and Failure for the Federal Govt in near future.

Banning PTI might seem like a brilliant idea to some, but it's akin to TRYING TO EXTINGUISH A FIRE WITH GASOLINE

It's a recipe for disaster, as demonstrated by the events of February 8th.
