A Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has revealed that the personal data of almost 2.7 million Pakistanis was stolen from the records of the National Database Regularity Authority (Nadra) during the period of previous five years, sources said on Wednesday.

The JIT, comprising the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and other intelligence agencies, was formed to investigate a data leak from the Nadra database in 2023.

According to the sources, the JIT submitted its report to the Interior Ministry after a year-long investigation into the serious matter.

The theft took place in Karachi, Multan, and Peshawar Nadra offices between 2019 and 2023, sources said quoting the official document of JIT.

The report stated that the stolen data was sent to Peshawar from Multan and then to Dubai, Later, it was sold in Argentina and Romania.

The JIT report recommended an upgrade of Nadra technology and departmental action against those involved in breaching the data of millions of people.

Earlier, the personal information of military officials was compromised by database authority, raising concerns about the security of Nadra's system.
