After two rounds of intense consultations between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the government, a deadlock remains as PTI has yet to present its charter of demands to the negotiation committee.
According to sources, the impasse is attributed to PTI’s reluctance, which has prevented the National Assembly Speaker, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, from calling the next meeting after two rounds of talks.
PTI will present its charter of demands after meeting with former prime minister Imran Khan, who is incacerated in Adiala Jail.
As per reports, if PTI’s demands are accepted, the party would be obligated to sign an agreement with the government.
Information from the NA Speaker's office revealed that neither representatives from the government nor PTI were contacted for the third round of the talks.
Government spokesperson Irfan Siddiqui briefed everything to the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) president Nawaz Sharif.
“PTI had assured us in both rounds that it would present its written demands, but now they insist on treating recorded conversations as a substitute for a formal written charter,”Siddiqui said while speaking to a local news channel.
“We want them to provide a written document so the government can clearly understand their demands,” Siddiqui added.
Earlier, following the second round of talks, Senator Siddiqui expressed concerns that the new demands by PTI may sabotage the entire negotiation process.
He quoted PTI leader Asad Qaiser as saying that the party was “reluctant to present its written demands.”
However, Qaiser also stressed that the government must involve all stakeholders and allies for a “unanimous outcome,” warning that avoiding a written charter would “sabotage the talks.”
