The unauthorized and open dissemination of sensitive and confidential information on social media platforms has drawn significant attention from the federal government.
Individuals found disclosing such confidential data will face legal prosecution under the Official Secrets Act. Khawaja Asif, the Defense Minister, emphasized via his official X account that the proliferation of such information poses a grave threat to Pakistan's strategic and economic interests, as well as to its diplomatic relations with friendly nations.
Asif underscored that all offenders will be subject to legal action under the Official Secrets Act 2023.
Those found guilty, whether directly or indirectly involved, will face strict consequences, including a potential two-year imprisonment term and fines.
The defence minister's statement comes days after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved a draft to amend the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 as part of the federal government's decision to regulate social media through legislation.
