Karachi police claimed on Thursday to have busted a five-member gang of domestic workers allegedly involved in theft of millions of rupees.

According to the police, the arrested women had been employed for the past nine years at the bungalow of a well-known industrialist in PECHS, Block 6. They said that the gang leader, identified as Arooj, stole the key to the house locker and had a duplicate made for Rs3,000.

During initial investigations, police said the suspects admitted to using the stolen money to buy a house, a car, a motorcycle and other valuable items. The gang leader revealed to the investigators that she purchased a house for Rs3.9 million, a car for Rs3 million and a motorcycle worth Rs260,000 with the stolen cash.

Police said that the car bought with the stolen money had been given on rent, while the motorcycle was being used by Arooj’s husband.

The arrested women were identified as Arooj, Sweera, Naila, Sana and Alishba. Police said they belong to Vehari, Okara, Faisalabad, Rahim Yar Khan and Kot Addu.

A case has been registered against them at Ferozabad police station, and further investigations are under way.
