The Federal Ministry of Law issued a notification on Friday announcing the appointment of six judges to the Federal Constitutional Court (FCC). The first Chief Justice of the FCC, Justice Aminuddin Khan, administered the oath to the newly appointed judges.
In the first phase, three judges took the oath. The government revealed the names of all six judges on Friday, Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi, Justice Ali Baqar Najafi, and Justice Aamir Farooq from the Supreme Court, Justice KK Agha from the Sindh High Court, Justice Rozi Khan from Balochistan and Justice Arshad Hussain Shah from the Peshawar High Court.
The Federal Constitutional Court was established under the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which grants the Judicial Commission of Pakistan the authority to create this new constitutional body.
According to the notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice on November 14, “Under clause (3) of Article 175-C of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the President is pleased to appoint the following judges of the Federal Constitutional Court of Pakistan.”
Under the 27th Amendment, the FCC is empowered to handle constitutional disputes, high level judicial transfers, and matters concerning the interpretation of constitutional provisions.
The amendment provides the legal framework for the court, defining its powers and establishing its role in Pakistan’s judicial system.
The 27th Constitutional Amendment also has direct implications for judicial transfers and the functioning of High Courts, highlighting its central role in Pakistan’s evolving judicial framework.
