Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif-led government has purchased 25 new Honda City vehicles valued at Rs240 million for the federal cabinet members, sources said on Thursday.
According to sources within the Cabinet Division, the luxury vehicles, each with a 1500cc capacity, are intended to replace existing cars for the government's high-officials.
The newly acquired vehicles have arrived at the division's pool car and will be allotted to federal ministers, sources added.
Secretary Cabinet Division, Kamran Afzal, confirmed the purchase to Dawn News, saying that the new vehicles will serve as replacements.
Notably, the acquisition received approval from the austerity committee prior to the purchase.
However, Pakistan has been facing a serious financial crunch for almost 2 years and the government is trying to avert the country's default chances.
A day earlier, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved a $7 billion loan for Pakistan, providing a critical boost to the country’s struggling economy.
