Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has decided to dissolve the Naya Pakistan Housing and Development Authority (NAPHDA), a key initiative launched under former prime minister Imran Khan's administration.
According to media reports, the federal government has opted not to renew the contract of Major General (retd) Amir Aslam Khan, who served as NAPHDA’s chairman. Instead, Captain (retd) Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, a BS-20 officer from the Pakistan Administrative Service, has been appointed as the acting chairman for a period of three months or until a permanent appointment is made. Iqbal is currently serving as the director general of the Federal Government Employees Housing Authority.
Established on January 15, 2020, following the passage of the Naya Pakistan Housing and Development Authority Bill in 2019, NAPHDA was mandated to plan, develop, and manage housing projects across the country.
Over the past five years, the authority was allocated a total budget of Rs2 billion, with an annual allocation of Rs400 million.
However, sources claim that the authority failed to deliver any substantial output during this period.
A formal notification regarding the new appointment was issued by the Establishment Division.
