Delays in the expansion of Karachi’s Green Line Phase-II corridor project are reportedly resulting in a daily financial loss of Rs20 million, officials said during a meeting chaired by Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori on Thursday.
The meeting of the Pakistan Infrastructure Development Company Limited (PIDCL) was attended by its General Manager of Engineering and other senior officials, who briefed the governor on the progress of ongoing federal development projects in the city.
According to the briefing, work on the Green Line Phase-II, stretching from Guru Mandir to Municipal Park, has remained suspended since September following a dispute between the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and the PIDCL.
The disagreement led Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab to halt construction, citing procedural violations.
The suspension, officials said, is causing substantial financial losses and further delaying the project, which is a key component of the federal government’s Karachi development plan aimed at improving urban transport.
The dispute reportedly arose after the mayor objected to the contractor’s no-objection certificate (NOC), prompting the federal government to clarify that the issue lay between the Karachi mayor and the contractor.
Governor Tessori expressed serious concern over the slow pace of work and directed PIDCL to immediately resolve the obstacles hindering completion. He called for a comprehensive report on all completed and ongoing projects and stressed that development works in the public interest must be completed within their stipulated timelines.
