Gujranwala police have arrested five of their own officials for alleged links to a drug dealer.

The arrests came as part of an anti-corruption drive launched by CPO Dr Sardar Ghiyas Gul Khan. The raid was planned to eliminate the “black sheep” within the force accused of facilitating narcotics trade and leaking sensitive information.

According to police officials, the detained officials are sub-inspector Shamim Ahmed, assistant sub-inspector Muhammad Asif, and constables Imran, Shahid Adnan and Yaseen.

All of them were stationed at various police stations across the district including Gakhar Mandi, Wazirabad Saddar, Ahmed Nagar and Gujranwala Cantonment.

Furthermore, investigators said the action was taken after analysis of the mobile phone data of a drug dealer, Sajid alias “Saju Khan.”

The data revealed communications and information that implicated the arrested policemen in supporting Sajid’s shady operations and sharing confidential details with him.

Authorities also reported that a significant quantity of hashish was recovered during searches linked to the accused officers.

Dr Ghiyas Gul Khan emphasized that no leniency will be shown to the policemen found to be backing the criminal networks.

Cases have been registered against the arrested officers and further investigations are underway.
