Pakistan’s former Ambassador to the United States, Husain Haqqani, advised Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan to abandon his aspirations, as the recently elected US president would not shape policies for him.
“I hope Imran Khan wakes up from his dreams, as people around him mislead him, and he easily believes anyone. US President's policies are not based on others’ ideas,” Haqqani said, speaking to Geo News.
He said he had never been a lobbyist, either in the present or past, but he [Trump] never spoke to end Imran Khan’s incarceration, why would he prioritise that “which has never been his priority in the election campaign.”
According to Haqqani, Trump seeks what benefitted him, “PTI would have to convince him that how Imran Khan's release can be beneficial for him so that he could take interest in his release from the jail.”
He said no one whom Trump spoke to after he was elected the next president, including Prime Minister Israel Netanyahu, Indian Premier Narendra Modi, and Crown Prince Saudi Arabia Muhammad bin Salman, asked to end Imran Khan’s imprisonment.
He further remarked that American presidents do not shape their policies at the behest of individuals, unlike Imran Khan.
However, Haqqani dismissed the stance that Donald Trump's election as president of the US would assist Imran Khan in getting out of jail until he was convinced by PTI that the former premier’s freedom would devote strength to his policies.
