The Islamabad High Court has declared Tariq Jahangiri ineligible for appointment as a judge in connection with a degree controversy case.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Sarfraz Dogar and Justice Azam Khan heard the case. During the proceedings, the Registrar of Karachi University appeared before the court and presented the original academic records, while Tariq Jahangiri did not appear in person.

During the hearing, Tariq Jahangiri’s counsel, Barrister Salahuddin, argued that three petitions filed by his client were pending before the court and should be heard first.

Advocate Mian Daud stated under oath that even Tariq Jahangiri’s enrollment forms were bogus. He added that if Jahangiri’s claims were genuine, he should present his LLB Part I and Part II marksheets.

The Registrar of Karachi University informed the court that the university had conclusively cancelled Tariq Jahangiri’s degree. He further stated that the principal of Islamia Law College had confirmed that Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri was never a student of the institution.

According to the registrar, Tariq Jahangiri was caught cheating during examinations, following which the unfair means committee imposed a three-year ban.

The committee penalized him for cheating and for threatening an examiner. Although he became eligible to reappear in examinations in 1992, he allegedly used forged enrollment forms to unlawfully obtain a law degree.

The registrar added that after verification by relevant authorities, the university syndicate issued a formal declaration canceling Tariq Jahangiri’s degree based on these findings.

In response to a query by the Chief Justice, the registrar clearly stated that the degree had been permanently cancelled by Karachi University.

During the proceedings, senior lawyer Akram Sheikh interrupted, objecting that the court could not examine the record without first deciding his pending petitions.

After hearing final arguments, the court reserved its verdict and later announced the decision, declaring Tariq Jahangiri disqualified from holding the office of judge.
