In a suburban area of Faisalabad, a remote village named Mamun Kanjan has a distinctive local governance system. The imam of the local mosque serves as the village head and has enforced bans on lavish weddings and smoking, in accordance with Islamic principles.
Mamun Kanjan village is located in 493 GB, Kamalia city of Punjab. The imam of the local mosque holds significant authority and has established rules for the villagers, who willingly adhere to them.
There are no Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) workers, and the villagers themselves are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the area.
Cigarettes have not been sold in any local shop for the past seven years. All the villagers adhere to the imam's guidance and smoking is prohibited in the village at his request.
Only the elders of the village are allowed to smoke hukkas in their own houses.
According to the mosque imam, Maulana Muhammad Amin, playing drums, singing, and setting off firecrackers are not permitted during weddings or other celebratory occasions.
In this village of over 10,000 people, there is only one central mosque. All residents gather there for Friday and Eid prayers.
The call to prayer is issued from the central mosque and reaches the entire village through the loudspeakers of all mosques.
The effective and organised administrative system established by the villagers demonstrates how communities can improve their societies through collective efforts.
