The Karachi administration is considering to impose a fine of Rs15,000 for violations of one-way traffic rules in an effort to alleviate congestion on busy routes.

This suggestion came in light of a rising number of accidents, particularly involving heavy vehicles, resulting in over 80 casualties over in the over three months.

Mayor of Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, stated that stricter penalties will enhance traffic control and restore adherence to laws and regulations in Pakistan’s commercial capital, Karachi.

According to directives from the Mayor, the fines would be collected by city wardens on roads operating under the city administration.

However, the exact amount of the fine, whether it will remain at Rs15,000 or be adjusted, has yet to be finalized.

As per sources, the recommendation will be discussed in the next council meeting.

Mayor Wahab emphasised that such measures were necessary to discourage citizens from breaking traffic laws and to protect them from potential accidents.

He urged residents to cooperate with the administration to help reduce the number of road accidents in Karachi.

Earlier, a traffic police official reported the confiscation of over 190 dumpers and tankers for failing to comply with designated speed limits and for not providing valid fitness certificates.

Following the instructions of CM Shah, the traffic police have recommended the temporary cancellation of registration for 174 vehicles due to the absence of fitness certificates.
