Karachi braces for heatwave from April 20 to 24

A heatwave is expected to hit Karachi from April 20 to 24, as hot and dry conditions persist across southern Pakistan, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned.

According to local weather updates, daytime temperatures in Karachi are forecast to range between 38°C and 41°C during this period. 

Dry northwesterly winds will further intensify the heat, making the weather feel hotter and more uncomfortable.

However, the sea breeze is expected to resume in the evening hours, bringing some relief from the extreme conditions.

Those venturing out in the heat, should follow these safety precautions to avoid heat-related health issues:

• Avoid going outdoors unnecessarily between 12 pm and 4 pm.
• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and fluids.
• Wear light, loose-fitting, and bright-colored clothing.
• Pay extra attention to the needs of children, the elderly, and those who are unwell.
• Cover your head and wear sunglasses when stepping out in the sun.
• Spread awareness among others to ensure the safety of everyone during the heatwave.

Meanwhile, parts of Sindh, Balochistan, and southern Punjab are likely to experience slight relief from the extreme temperatures on April 18 (today).

The PMD also forecast strong winds in Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Sujawal, Tharparkar, Umerkot, and Hyderabad during this period. These gusty winds may carry dust and trigger storm-like conditions, which could potentially impact local infrastructure.

In contrast, the upper regions of the country, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and parts of Punjab, are expected to receive heavy rain and hailstorms until April 20.
