Karachi building collapse: Death toll reaches 27 in tragic incident

Rescue teams have completed operations in Karachi’s Lyari Baghdadi area, where a five-storey building collapsed two days ago.

The death toll has risen to 27 after recovery efforts concluded at the site.

The devastating incident occurred on Friday morning around 10 a.m., when the residential structure came crashing down.

After nearly 48 hours of continuous rescue efforts, officials have declared the site cleared, although a precautionary search is still underway to ensure no victims remain under the debris.

In a separate but alarming development, structural cracks were discovered in another seven-storey building located in Lyari’s Agra Taj Colony. When police and Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) officials arrived to inspect the structure late at night, they faced resistance from the residents.

After successful negotiations, authorities evacuated the building, dismantled the water tank, cut off the power supply, and sealed the premises.

The district administration reports that the affected families have been relocated to a nearby government school for safety.

Deputy Commissioner South, Javed Nabi, revealed that the building was illegally constructed two years ago on just 60 square yards of land and housed 57 residents from 11 families.

A case has been registered at Kalri Police Station against the builder, Mansoor Shah, and the contractor involved.

According to the FIR, the building was erected without proper authorization and using substandard materials, posing a significant risk to lives and property. Despite being declared dangerous, it was still inhabited.
