Karachi has once again ranked among the world’s least liveable cities, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) Global Liveability Index 2025. Out of 173 cities evaluated, Karachi ranked 170th, slipping one spot from last year’s 169th position.

The EIU ranked cities based on five key categories, healthcare, education, infrastructure, stability, and environment. Karachi scored poorly in nearly all areas, reflecting ongoing urban challenges including poor governance, crumbling infrastructure, and environmental neglect.

Meanwhile, Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, earned the top spot as the most liveable city in the world, overtaking Vienna, which held the title from 2022 to 2024. Copenhagen received perfect scores in education, sustainability, and infrastructure.

Tied for second place were Vienna and Zurich, followed by Melbourne, Geneva, and Sydney. The only Asian city in the top 10 was Osaka, Japan, which shared the 7th spot with Auckland, New Zealand. Adelaide and Vancouver rounded out the top 10.

At the bottom of the list, Damascus (Syria) was ranked the least liveable city at 173, followed by Tripoli (Libya), Dhaka (Bangladesh), and Algiers (Algeria).

The report highlighted a global decline in stability across several regions, including Western Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia, due to rising political tensions and security risks.
