Major roads and access routes in Karachi have been closed and security significantly heightened as authorities prepare for ongoing protests following violent clashes linked to the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
According to police and law enforcement officials, closures on key routes leading to sensitive installations have been implemented, including routes to US Consulate, governor’s and chief minister’s houses, and other diplomatic zones to prevent further unrest.
Barriers and containers have been placed at major intersections with traffic diverted to alternate routes to ease movement for public.
In several areas, including Mai Kolachi Road, MT Khan Road and PIDC, authorities blocked movement as a precautionary measure, citing security concerns and potential protest mobilization.
Officials from the Karachi Traffic Police confirmed these road closures and urged commuters to follow updated traffic guidance.
The closures came after violent protests in which demonstrators in Karachi clashed with police and Rangers near the US Consulate. At least nine people were killed and several injured in those clashes, according to local hospital and police reports.
Demonstrators attempted to storm the embassy and other sensitive areas, prompting police action to disperse the violent crowd.
Authorities also warned that further public gatherings without permission are prohibited under extended restrictions across Sindh Province, and have called on citizens to express their grievances peacefully.
