Several employees at Khairpur Civil Hospital's morgue were infected after coming into contact with three severely decomposed bodies. The bodies had rotten due to a malfunctioning air conditioning system.
The provincial chief secretary asked for a follow-up over the incident from the health secretary, who instructed the Khairpur District Health Officer (DHO) Nadeem Jokhio to form an inquiry committee over the incident.
Local journalists reported that the Khairpur Civil Hospital morgue was plagued by inadequate air conditioning and a lack of necessary preservation materials, which led to the rapid decomposition of the dead bodies.
Some visitors at the Khairpur Civil Hospital filmed videos of morgue workers receiving medical treatment for infectious diseases after handling three unclaimed decomposed bodies.
The morgue's embalming machines were out of order for a long time.
In the video, the workers revealed that they had avoided bathing or shrouding the dead bodies after their colleagues became ill due to exposure to the corpses.
The morgue workers claimed that they had repeatedly notified the hospital administration about the deteriorating conditions in the morgue, but their reports had been dismissed.
The medical superintendent (MS) of the hospital established a three-member committee to investigate the malfunctioning of essential equipment and air conditions in the morgue.
The committee members included Javed Ahmed Phulpoto (chairman), Mukhtiar Lakho, and Ikram Tunio.
Khairpur DHO Nadeem Jokhio told the media that he would form a separate committee to conduct a transparent investigation into the incident.
