Air pollution in Punjab reached alarming levels, with Faisalabad recording an AQI of 444 and Gujranwala hitting 277. Experts warn of serious health risks for the vulnerable population.

Recent data from international monitoring websites indicate that several cities in Punjab are experiencing extremely high levels of air pollution. Kasur recorded the highest particulate matter (PM) concentration at 686 µg/m³, significantly exceeding the safe limits set by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Other affected cities include Multan (262 AQI), Lahore (253 AQI), Sialkot (199 AQI), and Bahawalpur (189 AQI).

The Punjab Environment Department reported that Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) had crossed 450 earlier today, categorizing the city’s air as “hazardous.” This ranking placed Lahore among Pakistan’s most polluted cities, though Faisalabad is currently experiencing even higher pollution levels than any other city in Punjab.

Particulate matter such as PM2.5 and PM10 consists of microscopic particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream. Long term exposure can lead to respiratory illnesses, heart disease, and aggravated asthma.

Authorities have warned that children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions are particularly vulnerable to these health risks.

The surge in pollution is mainly attributed to industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, burning of crop residue, and dust from construction activities. These factors continue to contribute to dangerously poor air quality levels in both urban and semi-urban areas across Punjab.
