The Lahore High Court, in a significant ruling, mandated punitive measures against Nikahkhawans (Nikah registrars) implicated in officiating marriages involving underage girls.

Justice Anwar-ul-Haq Pannu announced the judgement in response to a plea filed by Azmat Bibi.

Within its decree, the Lahore High Court emphasized its prior mandates aimed at curbing underage unions. Stressing the imperative nature of documentary evidence delineating the age of brides during the Nikah ceremony, the court underscored the accountability of Nikahkhawans and witnesses.

Expressing concern over the persistence of underage marriages despite judicial injunctions, the LHC judge lamented the apparent disregard of court directives by Nikahkhawans and Nikah registrars.

Consequently, the Lahore High Court directed the relevant authorities to rigorously enforce penalties against Nikahkhawans and Nikah registrars implicated in underage marriages.

Azmat Bibi, the petitioner, approached the court seeking intervention for the recovery of her 14-year-old daughter.
