A recent incident in Ghizer district of Gilgit-Baltistan highlighted the absence of a modern disaster warning system, as the timely action of a local shepherd saved hundreds of lives from a potential glacier outburst flood.
According to reports, a young shepherd, Wasiyat Khan, noticed the imminent danger when a glacier was about to burst.
He immediately moved his livestock to safety and rushed to alert the villagers. His quick response and loud warning calls from the mountains enabled residents to evacuate in time, preventing any loss of life.
The shepherd saved dozens of citizens from the flood, but he himself, along with six family members, became stranded on a mountain.
The Pakistan Army launched a rescue operation, alerted nearby residents, and successfully evacuated the brave shepherd who had risked his life to protect others.
Although hundreds of houses were damaged, no casualties were reported, thanks to Wasiyat Khan’s presence of mind. His courage and vigilance demonstrate how ordinary individuals can play extraordinary roles in saving lives during disasters.
Meanwhile, at Tali Das, a landslide blocked the flow of the Ghizer River, forming a temporary lake.
After six hours, the water broke through and created a new channel, easing the risk of large scale destruction.
In recognition of his courageous act, the Gilgit-Baltistan police presented Wasiyat Khan with a certificate of appreciation.
An effective early warning mechanism in every district of Gilgit-Baltistan is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Such systems are critical to ensuring timely evacuation, minimising damage, and safeguarding human lives in the face of increasing natural disasters.
