Mother of slain journalist Arshad Sharif passes away after brief illness

Riffat Ara Alvi, the mother of martyred journalist Arshad Sharif, passed away after a brief illness, the late journalist’s wife confirmed on Sunday.

Family sources said details of her funeral prayers and burial will be announced later.

Riffat Ara Alvi had been actively pursuing justice in her son’s killing case, which occurred in Kenya in 2022.

She consistently demanded accountability from the authorities involved in the investigation of the tragic incident.

Earlier, on December 3, 2022, the government-formed investigation committee submitted a comprehensive 400-page report to the Interior Ministry regarding Arshad Sharif’s death. The report incorporated findings and information gathered from Kenya and Dubai.

Arshad Sharif, a senior journalist and former ARY News anchor, was shot dead by Kenyan police on October 23, 2022, in Nairobi, where he was living in self-exile.

Kenyan authorities initially claimed the incident was a case of “mistaken identity,” but subsequent reports by Kenyan media and human rights groups cast serious doubt on that explanation, questioning the circumstances surrounding his death.
