Renowned scholar Mufti Taqi Usmani has said that no person, regardless of their rank or position, is exempt from judicial accountability under Islamic principles.

In a statement issued on Monday, he said that the examples set by the Khulafa-e-Rashideen show that leaders in Islam have historically remained answerable before the law.

Mufti Usmani criticised previous constitutional provisions that granted immunity to the president while in office, calling them contrary to Islamic teachings. He added that extending such protection to anyone for life goes against both the spirit of Shariah and the essence of the Constitution.

He warned that granting lifetime immunity would be a disgrace for the country and urged parliamentarians not to endorse what he described as a serious wrongdoing.
