The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has registered a case against Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Shandana Gulzar for allegedly peddling false information on social media about Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent visit to Egypt.
According to the agency, Gulzar allegedly shared a misleading post claiming that PM Shehbaz met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his trip to attend the Gaza ceasefire signing ceremony. The NCCIA stated that the claim was baseless, as Netanyahu did not participate in the event.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had travelled to Egypt to take part in the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit, where a formal agreement was signed to end Israel's war in Gaza.
During his stay, he held meetings with several global leaders, including Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The leaders reportedly welcomed the truce in Gaza and discussed regional peace efforts.
Soon after these meetings, several social media users—primarily PTI supporters—shared a low-quality image from the Prime Minister’s meeting with the Armenian leader, falsely suggesting that it showed him shaking hands with the Israeli Prime Minister.
In a press release, the NCCIA confirmed that Gulzar has been charged under Sections 11, 20, and 26A of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016.
