The 17th death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto, the first female Prime Minister of the Muslim world, is being observed today. She was assassinated in an attack on her rally at Rawalpindi's Liaquat Bagh on December 27, 2007.
Benazir Bhutto, who served twice as the Prime Minister of Pakistan, was a staunch advocate for democracy and fought against the dictatorships of General Zia-ul-Haq and General Pervez Musharraf, alongside her political rivals during her lifetime.
Her return to Pakistan in 2007, following years of exile, was marred by tragedy.
On October 18, 2007, her homecoming procession in Karachi was targeted by twin bombings, killing hundreds of people.
A few months later, on December 27, 2007, Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a deadly attack after addressing a rally in Liaquat Bagh, Rawalpindi, leaving the nation in mourning.
Preparations to commemorate the anniversary of the former head of state were finalised. Party workers and leaders have gathered in Larkana to pay their respects.
President Asif Ali Zardari, along with Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari, and Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, arrived in Naudero to participate in the observance.
Upon his arrival at Sukkur Airport, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and senior PPP leader Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah welcomed the former president.
Punjab Governor Saleem Haider, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, and other senior PPP leaders were also present on the occasion.
Later, Asif Ali Zardari visited Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, where he offered Fateha at the shrine of Benazir Bhutto and laid a floral wreath in her memory.
