Pakistan on Monday strongly condemned the drone attack near the United Arab Emirates’ Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, warning that any deliberate targeting of nuclear facilities could have serious consequences for regional and global security.

In a statement, the Foreign Office (FO) said such actions violated international law, including international humanitarian law, the United Nations Charter and the principles of nuclear safety outlined by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The statement came a day after a drone strike triggered a fire near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi. According to the UAE defence ministry, there were no casualties and radiation levels remained unaffected.

The UAE said two additional drones were intercepted and destroyed, adding that the drones had been launched from the “western border”. Authorities said investigations into the source of the attack were underway.

Pakistan said nuclear installations “must never be targeted under any circumstances” and warned that such actions could have “catastrophic and irreversible consequences” for human life, the environment and international peace.

The FO urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid steps that could further escalate tensions in the region.

It reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy, in line with the principles of the UN Charter, remained the only viable path towards peace and stability.
