The National Telecom and Information Technology Security Board (NTISB) has issued a crucial advisory highlighting the growing risks of cyberattacks across Pakistan.

The advisory warns of increased threats targeting personal and sensitive information through various digital tools, including browser extensions, virtual private networks (VPNs), and artificial intelligence-powered applications.

Browser extensions, widely used by millions for convenience, have been identified as a significant risk vector.

Hackers are reportedly exploiting these extensions to steal user credentials, particularly from platforms like Facebook and online banking services. Among the flagged tools are AI-powered extensions such as ChatGPT-4 and Gemini for Chrome, which the NTISB has labeled as potentially dangerous. Additionally, free VPNs and unverified AI chatbots have been included in the list of suspicious software.

The advisory emphasizes the need for vigilance and precautionary measures to mitigate these risks.

It underscores the importance of avoiding unverified tools, opting for reputable and regularly updated software, and utilizing licensed antivirus programs to enhance cybersecurity defenses.

Failure to take preventive steps, the NTISB warns, could leave users vulnerable to phishing attacks and compromised software, potentially leading to the theft of sensitive information.

The advisory serves as a stark reminder of the need to stay alert and adopt secure digital practices in light of these evolving threats.
