Parts of Karachi received rainfall on Sunday evening as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast that the latest monsoon spell would continue in the city until September 11.
According to the Met Office, the city is likely to experience rain accompanied by wind and thunderstorms, with chances of moderate to heavy showers at intervals. The weather authority cautioned that the downpour may lead to urban flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Rain was reported in Bahria Town, Liaquatabad, Federal B Area, North Karachi, North Nazimabad, Scheme-33, Gulshan-i-Hadeed and along the M-9 motorway. Other parts of Sindh, including Umerkot, Tharparkar and Tando Muhammad Khan, also experienced rainfall on Sunday.
The Met Office has further predicted widespread rains with scattered heavy to very heavy showers across several districts of Sindh, including Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Khairpur, Shaheed Benazirabad, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin and Jamshoro. Rainfall is also expected in Larkana, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Sukkur, Jacobabad and Ghotki until Thursday.
In Karachi, Mayor Murtaza Wahab said municipal teams had been deployed across the city to manage rain-related issues. He added that machinery was positioned at key points, rapid response units were on standby, and city wardens and anti-encroachment staff were directed to assist citizens. He also announced that a rain emergency centre would be established if the showers intensified.
While the rain brought relief from the sweltering heat, authorities urged residents to exercise caution. Last month, at least 15 people lost their lives in Karachi during heavy rains that damaged infrastructure, triggered power outages and disrupted daily life.
