The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert for the coming week, warning that most regions of the country will experience unusually high temperatures due to a high-pressure system developing in the upper atmosphere.
According to the PMD, southern areas — including Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan — are likely to witness severe heatwave conditions from April 14, with daytime temperatures expected to soar 6 to 8°C above normal between April 13 and 18.
Temperatures in northern and central areas, including Islamabad, upper and central Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir, may rise 4 to 6°C above normal during the same period. Night-time temperatures are also expected to remain above average.
The PMD has cautioned that the intense heat may trigger dust storms and windstorms, potentially damaging infrastructure such as electric poles, trees, vehicles, and solar panels.
Authorities have advised the public — especially children, the elderly, and women — to stay out of direct sunlight and remain adequately hydrated. Farmers are encouraged to adjust their crop management plans, particularly for wheat harvesting, and ensure the wellbeing of their livestock.
Additionally, the rising temperatures in northern regions could lead to accelerated snowmelt, increasing the risk of flooding from April 14 to 18.
Relevant departments have been instructed to remain vigilant and take preventive measures to minimize the impact of the expected weather conditions.
