The Punjab government has announced a new dress code for teachers in public sector schools, requiring them to wear black gowns during school hours.
A notification issued by the Punjab School Education Department on February 19 stated that the dress code will come into effect from February 23 (Monday). All chief executive officers (CEOs) of district education authorities (DEAs) are required to ensure the policy is implemented across the province, said the notification.
It emphasized that teaching is a profession that carries respect, authority, and moral responsibility in society. It said that the dignity and credibility of teachers are reflected in their “conduct and appearance,” and a clearly defined dress code would help enhance respect from students, parents, and the community.
Under the new guidelines, all teachers—regardless of gender, cadre, or location—are required to wear a black gown during school hours. The gown must be worn over modest and decent clothing that aligns with cultural, social, and ethical norms.
Male teachers are advised to wear shalwar kameez in plain or sober colors or pants with a shirt, paired with closed shoes or sandals with straps. Female teachers are instructed to wear a “suitable dress that reflects dignity,” along with closed shoes or modest sandals.
School heads will be responsible for ensuring daily compliance, while district-level CEOs have been directed to monitor and enforce the policy strictly.
