At least 14 people lost their lives and over 90 sustained injuries as powerful storms swept through several cities in Punjab on Saturday, disrupting flights, damaging infrastructure, and causing widespread power outages.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab, most fatalities occurred due to collapsing structures and falling debris. The deaths were reported from Lahore (3), Jhelum (2), Rawalpindi (1), Sheikhupura (1), Nankana Sahib (1), Layyah (1), Jhang (1), and Sialkot (1). Several mud houses also suffered damage in the affected areas.
Rescue operations were intensified, with officials placed on high alert. Relief Commissioner Nabeel Javed directed all relevant departments to remain prepared, while PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia assured that affected families would receive financial assistance. Citizens were advised to avoid unnecessary travel and take safety precautions during storms.
The adverse weather also impacted air traffic at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport. Multiple flights were cancelled, diverted, or delayed due to strong winds and poor visibility. Operations gradually resumed as conditions improved.
In response to power disruptions, the Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) declared a red alert and deployed teams for repair work. LESCO CEO Engineer Muhammad Ramzan Butt confirmed that materials had been dispatched and efforts were ongoing to restore electricity.
Meanwhile, the Motorway Police reported strong winds and showers along various sections of the M-4, M-5, and National Highway, urging drivers to exercise caution.
In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the PDMA issued a weather alert for rain and thunderstorms across multiple districts, including Chitral, Swat, Peshawar, and Waziristan. Authorities were instructed to maintain vigilance and assist citizens.
The storm also brought relief from an extended heatwave in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, where heavy rain and hail led to a sudden temperature drop and emergency declarations.
