Tensions flared on Wednesday in North Karachi after an overspeeding dumper truck rammed into two motorcyclists near Nagan Chowrangi Flyover, triggering public outrage that led to several heavy vehicles being set ablaze.

According to eyewitnesses, the dumper was driven by a teenager, approximately 17 to 18 years old, who was recklessly racing on a busy road. Bystanders reportedly confronted and physically assaulted the driver over his dangerous driving.

In an attempt to flee the scene, the teenager lost control of the dumper and crashed into two motorcycles. While both vehicles were destroyed, no fatalities were reported. However, one motorcyclist sustained injuries.

The incident sparked chaos, as angry citizens set fire to nine vehicles near Powerhouse Chowrangi and 4K Chowrangi. Police officials confirmed that the torched vehicles included five dumpers and four water tankers.

Of the total, five dumpers were set ablaze at Powerhouse Chowrangi, three water tankers at 4K Chowrangi, and one at Surjani Baba Mor. Authorities later managed to extinguish the fires on all vehicles.

Speaking to the media at the scene, Dumper Association leader Liaquat Mehsud claimed that 11 of his vehicles had been set on fire.

He asked the government to bring forward any victims of the accident and demanded the arrest of those responsible for the arson. He also called for better protection for dumper owners and drivers.

In response, dumper drivers staged a protest on the Super Highway, dumping garbage-laden trucks near Sohrab Goth’s Al-Asif Square to protest the attacks on their vehicles.

A police crackdown was launched late at night to apprehend those involved in the arson. Several suspects were taken into custody, with authorities identifying them through CCTV footage and mobile videos.

According to the SSP Central spokesperson, traffic at Powerhouse Chowrangi has resumed, and a heavy police presence remains in place. He warned that strict action will be taken against anyone attempting to disrupt law and order.
