315 mm rainfall in Lahore shatters 30-year record

The first monsoon spell has brought the provincial city to a standstill, with roads and streets resembling rivers after heavy rains accompanied by strong winds lashed Lahore on Friday.
Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Managing Director Muhammad Ghufran said the highest rainfall was recorded in Tajpura at 315 millimetres, breaking a 30-year-old record.
Other areas that received torrential downpours included Lakshmi Chowk (170 mm), Mughalpura (145 mm), Gulshan Ravi (151 mm), Chowk Nakhda (155 mm), Iqbal Town (152 mm), Cordoba Chowk (152 mm), Sumanabad (153 mm), Airport (86 mm), Upper Mall (130 mm), Gulberg (41 mm), Nishtertown (162 mm), Jail Road (69 mm), and Farrukhabad (140 mm).
The administration reported that rain is still continuing in several areas, including Davis Road, China Chowk, Canal Road, Garhi Shahu, Allama Iqbal Road, Allah Road, Kashmir Road, Egerton Road, Johar Town, Shimla Pahari, and surrounding areas, causing water accumulation in several important locations.

The city's drainage operation is currently underway, with efforts being made to restore normalcy in the affected areas.
"The water has been removed from Lakshmi Chowk and other areas are also being cleared. Soon the city will be cleared of rainwater," said the WASA MD.
On the other hand, the Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) predicted more rains in Lahore during the next 24 hours.
