Police have submitted a preliminary investigation report to the court regarding the tragic building collapse in Baghdadi, Lyari, which claimed 27 lives and left four injured on July 4, 2025.

According to the report, the building, constructed in 1986, was a Ground Plus 5 structure divided into two parts. Both sections had been in a dilapidated and uninhabitable state for a long time.

The report states that officials from the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) had been aware of the deteriorating condition of the structure since 2022, but failed to take meaningful action.

A portion of the building, consisting of 20 flats, collapsed due to what police have termed criminal negligence on the part of SBCA officers.

Despite being fully aware of the building's dangerous condition, the SBCA officials took no serious steps to prevent the tragedy, the report said, adding, their negligence and carelessness directly led to the collapse.

The police report has named 14 individuals, including six SBCA directors, as culpable in the incident.

Further legal proceedings are expected as the investigation continues.
