A full court meeting of the Supreme Court, chaired by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, unanimously approved the updated Supreme Court Rules, 2025 on Friday to improve service delivery and ensure faster, more affordable justice.

According to the court’s statement, 17 of the 19 serving Supreme Court judges attended the meeting. Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Ayesha Malik did not participate.

The court currently has 19 judges following a series of recent changes. The total strength was previously 24, but after two judges resigned, the number dropped to 22. With three judges subsequently moving to the Constitutional Court, the working strength now stands at 19.

The statement said that a comprehensive review of the Supreme Court Rules, 1980 had been completed, leading to the approval of new amendments under the updated 2025 framework.

The draft of the revised rules was prepared by a committee comprising Justice Shahid Waheed, Justice Irfan Saadat Khan, Justice Naeem Afghan, and Justice Aqeel Abbasi.
