Senior Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Makhdoom Ali Khan has resigned from his position as a member of the Law & Justice Commission.

He submitted his resignation to the Chief Justice of Pakistan, stating that he cannot remain part of an institution that was established with promises of legal reforms but is deprived of an independent judiciary.

In the resignation letter, he emphasized that without an independent judiciary, no legal reform can be effective or meaningful, and continuing under such circumstances would be tantamount to self-deception.

Advocate Makhdoom Ali Khan further criticized the 27th Constitutional Amendment, saying it has “completely sunk the ship of an independent judiciary.”

He concluded his resignation with a verse by poet Mustafa Zaidi: "Loot gayi sheher-e-hawadess mein mataa-e-alfaz, Ab jo kehna hai to kaise koi noha kahiye

Earlier, Supreme Court judges, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Athar Minallah, submitted their resignations hours after President Asif Ali Zardari signed the 27th Constitutional Amendment into law.

In his resignation letter, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah described the amendment as a “grave assault on the Constitution of Pakistan” that “dismantles the Supreme Court, subjugates the judiciary to executive control, and strikes at the heart of constitutional democracy.”
