More than 150 prisoners including three PTI MPAs reportedly escaped as unidentified gunmen attacked prison vans near Sanjgani Toll Plaza in Islamabad on Friday, according to police.

Police said that 187 prisoners, who were involved in D Chowk protests, were being shifted to Attock Jail after their court appearance in the federal capital when unknown persons attacked the vans.

Sources said that MPAs Anwar, Liaqat and Yasir were among the fugitives.

Along with the politicians, the vans also carried detained government employees and police personnel. The attackers opened fire on the vehicles, puncturing their tires and created chaos that allowed several inmates to escape.

Police sources have confirmed that multiple officers were injured during the attack and were swiftly taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

In the wake of the incident, law enforcement agencies launched a manhunt and successfully recaptured several escapees.

Authorities are currently investigating the incident to determine the identities of the attackers.
