In a move that has raised eyebrows, the Sindh government has approved the purchase of new and expensive vehicles for hundreds of its officers, despite the province's dire economic conditions, Express News reported on Friday.
Express News, in its report, said that the Department of Services, General Administration, and Coordination has sent letters to all commissioners and seniour members of the Board of Revenue, directing them to provide details of the vehicles required by concerned officers.
According to the publication, the reason for this move is that the existing official vehicles used by Deputy Commissioners, Assistant Commissioners, and other officers have become old and are causing difficulties in their official duties.
However, critics argue that the decision is tone-deaf, given the province's alarming rates of poverty and unemployment.
According to a World Bank report, Sindh has a staggering 49.9% rate of food insecurity among children and women due to poverty.
The province's health indicators are also concerning, with higher rates of maternal and child mortality compared to other provinces.
The purchase of luxury vehicles is estimated to cost millions of rupees.
Express News, quoting the policy mentioned in the letters, said that 1300cc Toyota Yaris will be purchased for government officers working in urban areas or sub-divisions and divisional and district headquarters of the province.
Hilux Four by Four Double Cabin Standard Edition will be purchased for high-officials serving their duties in rural areas, it added.
The Sindh government's decision to splurge on luxury vehicles for its officers while ignoring the pressing issues of poverty and unemployment has raised questions about its commitment to the welfare of its citizens.
