Six injured as roof collapses in six-storey building in Karachi’s Kharadar

A six-storey residential building in Karachi’s Kharadar area partially collapsed from within on Monday, leaving at least six people injured and trapping more than 20 residents under the debris. Rescue operations are underway as emergency teams work to evacuate those still stuck inside.

According to initial reports, the ceiling of the building’s third floor caved in, triggering the collapse of two additional floors. The incident severely damaging the internal structure. At least 22 people, including members of three families, are reportedly trapped.

A rescue official stated that narrow streets in the congested neighbourhood are making it difficult for emergency crews to carry out evacuation efforts. Specialised snorkels and other equipment are being used to reach victims stranded on higher floors.

Preliminary findings suggest that unauthorised construction of additional seventh and eighth floors placed excessive stress on the already weakened building structure, leading to the internal collapse.

The structure couldn’t bear the extra load from the upper floors, a rescue team member said, adding that immediate action was taken once the incident was reported.

Despite the challenging conditions, including limited access due to cramped alleyways, rescue teams remain active at the scene. Authorities have assured that all possible resources are being deployed to ensure no lives are lost.

Meanwhile, panic has spread among local residents as concerns grow about the safety of nearby buildings. Authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the building’s construction and structural integrity.
