Talks between Somalia and Pakistan over the possible purchase of 24 modern fighter aircraft have made significant progress, according to media reports.

Somalia is said to be engaged in high-level discussions with Pakistan to acquire the JF-17 Thunder fighter jet.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, the reports said that a proposal to procure up to 24 aircraft is currently under consideration.

The potential defence deal is estimated to be worth around $900 million (approximately Rs251 billion). Talks are said to be focused particularly on the advanced Block III variant of the aircraft, which features upgraded avionics and combat capabilities.

If finalised, the agreement would mark a major step in rebuilding Somalia’s air combat capability, which has remained limited since the collapse of the Somali state in 1991. Reports suggest the proposed package may also include pilot training, weapons integration and long-term logistical support alongside the aircraft.

There are also indications that Saudi Arabia and Turkey could potentially provide financial backing for the deal.

Pakistan has previously exported the JF-17 to countries including Myanmar, Nigeria and Azerbaijan, while Bangladesh and Iraq have also shown interest in the aircraft.
