The outgoing caretaker Sindh chief minister Justice (retd) Maqbool Baqar claimed that the street crime rate in Karachi has decreased during interims’ tenure with effective policing measures they have taken against muggers in the metropolitan.
According to Baqar, the street crime rate declined by 4.19 per cent in 2023.
“For the first time in seven years, street crime in Karachi has declined by 4.19pc in 2023,” said a report issued on Sunday, on the performance of the caretaker provincial government.
“We have strived to upgrade the police capacity by adding Shaheen force — deactivated for years. Around 386 new bikes were put in the force for patrolling in the hotspots of street crime,” the report said quoting outgoing interim setup head.
He added, “Madadgar 15 has been improved by giving them access to technology, increasing the number of computers and adding more vehicles for the squad.”
Moreover, the report said Baqar took charge of provincial governance in mid-August, during his over six-month tenure, he worked hard and made tangible improvements.
The report claimed, in the first eight months of 2023, the province witnessed at least 170 incidents of kidnapping for ransom across the province, while the next six months saw 63 such incidents.
“This has been possible due to the operation against dacoit gangs in the riverine area,” said the report.
