US President Donald Trump on Wednesday commended Pakistan's role in arresting the mastermind responsible for the 2021 Kabul airport bombing.

Trump made the remarks during his first address to Congress since taking office.

"Three and a half years ago, a [Daesh] terrorist killed 13 American service members and countless others in the Abbey Gate bombing," he stated.

The attack took place as US forces and thousands of Afghans gathered at Kabul airport, attempting to flee the country following the Taliban’s takeover. A total of 13 US service members and 17 Afghans lost their lives in the bombing.

"Tonight, I am pleased to announce that we have just apprehended the top terrorist responsible for that atrocity. And he is right now on his way here to face the swift sword of American justice," Trump declared.

During his speech, Trump thanked the Pakistani government for its cooperation in the operation, referring to the suspect as a "monster." He described the development as "a huge day for the affected families."

"This is a very momentous day for those 13 families, whom I got to know very well. Their children were murdered. What a horrible day," he remarked.

Trump also used the occasion to criticise the Biden administration’s handling of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, calling it a "disastrous" and "embarrassing moment" in American history.

His speech was met with protests from Democratic lawmakers, some of whom held placards reading "Liar." Democratic Congressman Al Green strongly objected to Trump’s remarks and was subsequently removed from the session.

Addressing the opposition, Trump said, "I can't do anything to bring a smile to a Democrat’s face. They won’t stand for me, but this shouldn't happen."
