Veteran journalist and author Zubeida Mustafa died in Karachi on Wednesday at the age of 84.
With a career spanning over five decades, she became a pioneering voice in Pakistani journalism, championing causes ranging from women’s empowerment and children’s rights to health, education, and the struggles of everyday citizens.
She was widely respected for her integrity and dedication to ethical journalism.
Author of eight books, Mustafa was the recipient of numerous accolades, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Women’s Media Foundation. She also served as a mentor to generations of journalists, particularly women navigating a traditionally male-dominated field.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) paid tribute, calling her a rare voice who “championed social, cultural, and language rights like few others” and consistently stood with the oppressed.
Describing her passing as an “irreparable loss,” the HRCP extended its condolences to her family and peers.
