A 36-inch water pipeline of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) has once again burst at the University of Karachi, causing massive flooding in the area and raising concerns about the city's fragile water infrastructure.
According to university officials, a 36-inch pipeline burst on campus, resulting in the complete submersion of the road leading to the university’s cemetery.
Additionally, a hole was detected in a nearby 84-inch main water line, adding to the urgency of the situation.
The Karachi Water Board confirmed the incident, stating that the leakage occurred at the joint of the 36-inch diameter pipeline. Repair work has begun on an emergency basis and is expected to be completed by this afternoon.
It is worth noting that just a few weeks ago, the rupture of an 84-inch pipeline had left several areas of Karachi without water for over 15 days. The recurrence of such incidents has intensified public frustration over the deteriorating condition of the city’s water supply system.
Authorities have yet to announce whether the current rupture will affect water supply to nearby residential areas.
The leakage in the main supply line is set to add to the water woes of residents in most parts of the city as they would suffer nearly 40 per cent water shortage for the next four days due to the ensuing repair works.
