Astronauts on Artemis II have described a mix of awe and anticipation as they prepare to return to Earth following a groundbreaking journey around the Moon.
The four-member crew, Victor Glover, Reid Wiseman, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen, are set to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere in their Orion capsule.
According to reports from NASA, the crew traveled to the far side of the Moon, reaching a record distance of approximately 252,000 miles from Earth, farther than any humans have ever gone.
Moreover, they conducted a six-hour lunar flyby, providing valuable real-time observations and scientific insights into the Moon’s surface.
Now as the spacecraft begins its return, it is expected to reach speeds of nearly 24,000 mph, putting Orion’s heat shield to a critical test. The astronauts are scheduled to splash down off the coast of Southern California, marking the end of their nearly 10-day mission.
Beyond its technical achievements, the mission carried emotional moments. The crew shared limited but memorable contact with their families. The mission also included a proposal to name a lunar crater after Wiseman’s late wife.
Artemis II is a key step in NASA’s broader Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the Moon and eventually establish a sustained presence there.
Future missions, including Artemis III, are expected to build on this success and pave the way for deeper space exploration, including potential missions to Mars.
