A group of students from Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Campus, Khairpur, has developed an AI-powered robo-vehicle that could revolutionize Pakistan's defense technology.
Showcased at the 4th Research and Technology Showcase at the Karachi Expo Centre, the prototype is equipped with an advanced laser gun capable of incinerating targets within seconds.
Designed to reduce casualties among security personnel, the robo-vehicle provides a safer alternative to traditional combat methods by enabling remote operations.
The system, powered by a hybrid electric setup, eliminates the need for conventional ammunition by firing laser beams at the speed of light. The prototype’s capabilities include distinguishing between friendly and enemy forces and targeting both stationary and moving objects with precision.
Its current range of six feet can be extended with further development, potentially allowing it to disable enemy missiles mid-air.
Syed Owais Ahmed, a student from the Department of Electronics, explained that the technology offers a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to conventional weaponry, with unlimited "ammunition" and remote-control functionality ensuring safety for operators.
Sindh Chief Minister, who attended the event, lauded the innovation, calling it a significant step forward in defense technology. If implemented, Pakistan would become the first country in the Islamic world and the fifth globally to deploy such advanced AI-powered military systems, joining the ranks of the US, UK, Israel, and South Korea.
Equipped with features like infrared sensors, cameras, and specialized lenses, the robo-vehicle reflects the ingenuity and technical prowess of the university's students and faculty. Beyond military applications, the innovation promises to reduce defense expenditures and enhance operational efficiency.
This achievement underscores the potential of local talent in contributing to national security, paving the way for further advancements in defense technology.
